Learn about the clinical link between gut health and musculoskeletal conditions here – Physiospot – Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy in the Spotlight

The gut microbiome is a crucial concept for healthcare clinicians but it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are two new learning opportunities from expert Christopher Martey to help you to understand the gut microbiome and how it affects the health of your patients.

Understanding the link between gut health and musculoskeletal conditions is vital for clinicians to grasp.  Emerging research suggests that the gut microbiome can significantly impact systemic inflammation, immune function, and overall health, which in turn can influence musculoskeletal conditions and rehabilitation outcomes. The term gut microbiome has gained popularity in recent clinical practice and research.  But what does it actually mean, and how does it affect the health of your patients?

The human microbiome consists of the entire community of microorganisms (known as the microbiota) that reside on and inside the body. The largest concentration of these microorganisms is found in the gut, referred to as the “gut microbiome”. The human gut microbiome and its role in health and disease has been the subject of extensive research, looking at the relationships between human metabolism, nutrition, physiology and immune function.

Did you know that the gut-brain axis suggests that the gut microbiota influences the central nervous system, which can affect pain perception and mood, both of which are important considerations in musculoskeletal conditions? This suggests that evaluating and addressing gut health may be an important aspect of treating musculoskeletal conditions. Researchers and clinicians are increasingly acknowledging the connection between gut health and musculoskeletal health. This exciting and rapidly evolving area of research has effects on rehabilitation practice and can be used as a tool to improve patient outcomes.

If you are interested in understanding more, we have TWO opportunities for you to do so.
