Leyte Representative Richard Gomez on Wednesday called on the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to allow national team athletes to resume training in venues under its jurisdiction amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gomez, a former national fencer who won a gold medal in the men’s team epee during the 2005 Southeast Asian Games edition in Manila, said athletes need to train now in preparation for the 32nd SEAG in 2023 which will be held in Cambodia from May 5 to 17, 2023.

“Rigorous training under the most optimal conditions must be undertaken for athletes who will be representing the country in the upcoming 32nd SEA Games in 2023 for them to realize their full potential and best performance,” Gomez said in filing House Resolution 202.

The training venues under PSC’s jurisdiction referred to by Gomez include the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila City and the Ultra Sports Complex in Pasig City which were temporarily converted into COVID-19 quarantine facilities at the height of the pandemic when sporting events, including training, were prohibited.

“The PSC should ensure that all athletes who will be representing the Philippines in the 32nd SEA Games in 2023 are given access to and permission for training activities at the Rizal Memorial Stadium and the Ultra Sports Complex,” he said.

Gomez said conducting training safely is possible, citing Ormoc City’s hosting of the training of the Philippine fencing team and modern pentathlon team for two years amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Philippines finished fourth in the medal table during the 2022 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi this year with 52 gold medals, 70 silvers and 105 bronzes. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
